40.1 The Structure of 0: Dharmata, Emptiness, Suchness
0 is not “nothing.” It is the absence of inherent existence. It is infinite potentiality. It is the ground where past and future coexist. It is the source of Samantabhadra’s vow‑ocean.
In the language of the Sixth Patriarch: “Originally pure, originally unborn.”
\( 0 = \text{Dharmata} = \text{Emptiness} = \text{Suchness} \)
40.2 The Structure of 1: Vow + Wisdom
1 = Vow + Wisdom is the first movement of the Tathāgata‑store. Vow is direction; wisdom is structure. Vow is motive force; wisdom is geometry.
\( 1 = \text{Vow} + \text{Wisdom} \)
In the Sixth Patriarch’s words: “Originally complete, originally unmoving.”
40.3 The Dynamics of Φ: The Ten Gates of the World‑Ocean
Φ is the complete manifestation of the world‑ocean. It includes the ten gates: origin‑conditions, substrates, shapes, substances, adornments, purity, Buddha‑appearance, kalpa‑duration, kalpa‑transformation, and non‑differentiation.
\( \Phi = \text{World‑Ocean (Ten Gates)} \)
40.4 The Generation Chain: 0 → 1 → Φ
The universe unfolds in a precise sequence:
\( 0 \xrightarrow{\text{Vow + Wisdom}} 1 \xrightarrow{\text{Ten Gates}} \Phi \)
- 0 gives rise to vow because emptiness is infinitely open.
- Vow gives rise to wisdom because compassion requires understanding.
- Vow + wisdom give rise to worlds because beings require a field to awaken.
- Worlds return to vow through practice and realization.
- Vow returns to emptiness without residue.
This is “non‑arising yet giving rise to all dharmas.”
40.5 The Phase‑Structure of Time: Simultaneity of Past and Future
Time is not linear. Time is a phase‑structure of the observer. In the Samantabhadra‑phase, past, present, and future appear simultaneously.
\( \text{Time} = \text{Observer‑Dependent Phase} \)
This is why one thought contains three times.
40.6 The Geometry of “Mind Encompasses Space”
Space is a projection of mind. Time is a projection of mind. Worlds are projections of mind. Buddhas are the full awakening of mind.
\( \Phi = \text{Mind’s Geometric Expression} \)
40.7 The Unity of Huayan, Chan, and the Universe Equation
The Sixth Patriarch’s five statements map perfectly onto the equation:
- Originally pure = 0
- Originally unborn = 0
- Originally complete = 1
- Originally unmoving = 1
- Able to give birth to all dharmas = Φ
\( 0 = 1 + \Phi \)
This is the instantaneous loop of enlightenment: emptiness → vow + wisdom → worlds → realization → emptiness.
One thought of complete clarity is Buddhahood.
