1. Tathāgata‑wisdom is omnipresent
Child of the Buddha, Tathāgata‑wisdom is without boundary and without absence. Why? Because there is not a single being who does not fully possess Tathāgata‑wisdom. It is only because of deluded thoughts, inverted grasping, and clinging that they do not realize it. Once deluded thoughts are left behind, the wisdom of all‑knowing, the spontaneous wisdom, and the unobstructed wisdom all appear directly before them.
In the language of the Huayan Universe Equation, this means:
0 = 1 + Φ
0: Dharmadhātu‑body · 1: Vow‑wisdom in function · Φ: World‑field of deluded appearance
All beings abide originally in the zero‑point of the Dharmadhātu, the luminous ground of Tathāgata‑wisdom. The “world” appears only because the tensor action of vow‑wisdom T(Φ) unfolds as 1 + Φ. To forget this is to fall into delusion; to remember this is awakening.
2. The great scripture scroll within a dust‑mote
Child of the Buddha, it is like a great scripture scroll whose size equals the entire three‑thousand‑fold great‑thousand world. It records all events within that world: the Iron Ring Mountains, the great earth, the oceans, Mount Sumeru, the palaces of the earth‑gods, the palaces of the desire‑realm gods, the form‑realm, and even the formless‑realm. Each domain is written in full, and the scroll is equal in size to all that it contains.
Yet this vast scripture scroll, equal in volume to the great‑thousand world, is entirely contained within a single dust‑mote. And as it is with one dust‑mote, so it is with all dust‑motes.
This is precisely the “holographic” structure of the Universe Equation: each point of the world‑field Φ contains the full pattern of the whole. One dust‑mote is the entire universe; the entire universe is present in one dust‑mote. This is the Indra‑net structure of:
one is all, all is one; one in all, all in one.
3. Breaking the dust‑mote, revealing the great scripture
Child of the Buddha, there is a person of bright wisdom, endowed with pure heavenly vision. He sees this great scripture scroll abiding within a dust‑mote, yet bringing no benefit to beings. He then thinks: “I shall, by the power of vigor, break open this dust‑mote, draw out this scripture, and let it benefit all beings.”
Having made this resolve, he applies skillful means, breaks the dust‑mote, brings forth the great scripture, and causes all beings to receive its benefit. As it is with one dust‑mote, so it is with all.
In the language of the Universe Equation, “breaking the dust‑mote” means breaking deluded thought. “Drawing out the great scripture” means letting Tathāgata‑wisdom appear. The act of benefiting beings is the functioning of vow‑wisdom, the “1” in:
0 = 1 + Φ
To break Φ is to dissolve delusion. To let 1 function is to let vow‑wisdom move. To return to 0 is to rest in the Dharmadhātu‑body itself.
4. The Tathāgata’s exclamation: “How marvelous!”
Child of the Buddha, the Tathāgata, with unobstructed, pure wisdom‑eye, surveys all beings throughout the Dharmadhātu and exclaims:
“How marvelous, how marvelous! These beings all fully possess Tathāgata‑wisdom, yet in their ignorance and confusion they neither know nor see it.”
The Universe Equation expresses the same lament in another form: beings abide originally in 0, yet cling to 1 + Φ as “the real world”. They take the tensor action T(Φ) as the universe, take Φ as the self, and take 1 as “their own wisdom”, forgetting that only 0 is the true ground.
5. Leaving delusion, realizing all‑knowing wisdom
The Tathāgata then says:
“I shall teach them the holy path, so that they may forever leave deluded grasping, and see within their very bodies the vast Tathāgata‑wisdom, no different from that of the Buddhas.”
To “leave deluded thoughts” is, in the language of the Equation, to let Φ tend to zero. When Φ is no longer grasped, the functional distinction of 1 also subsides into 0. What remains is the all‑knowing wisdom of the Dharmadhātu itself:
all‑knowing wisdom, spontaneous wisdom, unobstructed wisdom = the intrinsic luminosity of 0.
6. Final identity
Child of the Buddha, the teaching that “all beings fully possess Tathāgata‑wisdom” and the Universe Equation
0 = 1 + Φ
are not two. They are two languages for one reality:
- Intrinsic ground: 0 · Dharmadhātu‑body · Tathāgata‑wisdom
- Deluded appearance: Φ · world‑field · grasped phenomena
- Compassionate function: 1 · vow‑wisdom · liberating activity
To forget this is samsara. To remember this is Buddhahood. To live this, moment by moment, is the practice meaning of the Huayan Universe Equation.
