Chapter 54 · The Ten Body‑Aspects of the Tathāgata

The Universe Equation and the Buddha’s All‑Pervading Body

1. The Tathāgata’s Body Is Not a Body

“The Bodhisattva should not see the Tathāgata in one dharma, one event, one body, one land, or one being. He should see the Tathāgata everywhere.”

The sutra begins by dismantling the notion that the Buddha’s “body” is a physical form. The Tathāgata’s body is not an object but the awakened mode of the entire Dharma‑realm.

0 = 1 = Φ

In the Universe Equation:

  • 0 is the unconditioned, formless nature
  • 1 is wisdom‑activity
  • Φ is the world‑field of all phenomena

The “Buddha‑body” is the unity of these three— the Dharma‑realm itself in a state of complete awakening.

2. First Body‑Aspect: All‑Pervading, Without Coming or Going

Like space, which pervades all forms yet has no coming or going, the Buddha’s body pervades all beings, all dharmas, all worlds.

This is the manifestation of 0’s omnipresence within Φ.

3. Second Body‑Aspect: Wisdom‑Light Without Discrimination

The Buddha’s body radiates wisdom‑light that illuminates all wholesome roots, yet the Buddha makes no distinctions and engages in no conceptual play.

This is 1’s activity grounded in 0’s non‑discrimination.

4. Third Body‑Aspect: The Sun of Wisdom Benefits All Beings

Like the sun that dries, warms, ripens, and reveals, the Buddha’s wisdom‑sun:

  • Eliminates evil
  • Generates good
  • Transforms ignorance into wisdom
  • Opens the lotus of awakening

This is the universal beneficence of 1 → Φ.

5. Fourth Body‑Aspect: Illumination According to Capacity

The sun shines equally, yet mountains and valleys receive light differently. Likewise, the Buddha’s wisdom first illuminates Bodhisattvas, then Pratyekabuddhas, then Śrāvakas, then beings with wholesome roots.

This is the interplay of:

  • 0 — equality
  • 1 — responsiveness
  • Φ — differences in capacity

6. Fifth Body‑Aspect: Benefiting Even the Blind

Even beings without “eyes of faith” are benefited by the Buddha’s wisdom‑sun. They may not see the Buddha, but the Buddha’s power reduces their suffering and plants the seeds of liberation.

This is the unconditional compassion of 0 + 1 acting within Φ.

7. Sixth Body‑Aspect: The Moon‑Body with Four Marvels

Like the moon that:

  • Outshines all stars
  • Shows fullness and waning
  • Appears in all clear waters
  • Seems to appear before each viewer

The Buddha’s body is:

  • Supreme among all sages
  • Appearing differently according to beings
  • Reflected in all pure minds
  • Experienced as “speaking directly to me”

8. Seventh Body‑Aspect: Manifesting According to Beings’ Minds

Without dividing or multiplying himself, the Buddha appears in forms suited to each being’s aspiration.

This is the principle:

Mind → Buddha‑Body

9. Eighth Body‑Aspect: The Buddha as the Great Physician

The Buddha is the supreme healer who cures all afflictions. His body never decays, never rests, never ceases benefiting beings.

This is 1’s healing function grounded in 0’s purity.

10. Ninth Body‑Aspect: The Buddha as the Great Jewel

Like a great jewel that transforms all who touch its light, the Buddha’s body purifies beings, enriches them with Dharma, and leads them toward Buddhahood.

11. Tenth Body‑Aspect: The Buddha as the Wish‑Fulfilling Jewel

The Buddha fulfills the aspirations of all beings who see him, hear his name, or praise his virtues. Yet only beings with sufficient roots can truly perceive him.

Conclusion: The Ten Body‑Aspects and the Universe Equation

The ten body‑aspects are not ten physical forms, but ten modes in which the awakened Dharma‑realm becomes visible.

0 = 1 = Φ

The Tathāgata’s body is the Dharma‑realm itself— formless, luminous, compassionate, and all‑pervading. To see these ten aspects is to see the Universe Equation embodied.
