Chapter 38: The Causal Structure of the World‑Sea
— Non‑Originated, Mind‑Based, Illusory, and Without Coming or Going
In the previous chapters, we established the body‑type, holographic, topological,
and dynamical structures of the world‑sea.
This chapter enters the deepest layer:
the causal structure of the world‑sea.
The sutra’s teaching—spoken through the celestial drum—reveals the core principle:
causes and effects do not come from the ten directions,
do not arise from inside or outside,
do not flow from past to future,
but abide in the mind, arising from delusion, without any origin.
This is the Huayan universe’s most profound causal theory:
causality is not a flow of substances but the unfolding of mind‑configurations.
1. Causality Does Not Come from the Ten Directions
“As my sound does not come from the east,
nor from south, west, north, the four intermediates, above or below,
so too the fruition of karma and buddhahood
does not come from the ten directions.”
1. Causality is non‑spatial
\[
\text{Cause/Effect} \neq \text{From Space}
\]
The celestial drum’s sound has no spatial origin.
Likewise, karma, rebirth, hell, light, and buddhahood
do not “come from somewhere.”
2. Causality is neither internal nor external
“As I am not seen by the eye yet produce sound,
so the bodhisattva in the stainless samādhi
is not seen by the eye yet manifests everywhere.”
\[
\text{Cause/Effect} \neq \text{Inside},\quad
\text{Cause/Effect} \neq \text{Outside}
\]
Causality is not an internal emission nor an external intrusion.
It is non‑dual manifestation.
2. Causality Abides in the Mind: The Mind‑Origin Structure
“Karmic actions do not come from the east…
they accumulate and abide in the mind;
they arise from delusion and have no place of abiding.”
1. The root of causality is mind
\[
\text{Cause/Effect} = \text{Mind‑Configuration}
\]
Karma does not come from outside.
It “abides in the mind” and arises from deluded cognition.
2. Causality has no location
\[
\text{Cause/Effect has no location}
\]
Causality is not a spatial object but a cognitive pattern.
3. Causality as Illusion: Mirror, Magician, and Drum
1. Mirror analogy: no coming, no going
“As a clear mirror reflects all forms…
do the images enter the mirror or leave it?
The answer: they do not.”
\[
\text{Cause/Effect} \sim \text{Mirror‑Image}
\]
Causality appears, but does not “enter” or “exit” reality.
2. Magician analogy: no substantiality
“As a magician deceives the eye,
so too are all karmic actions.”
Causality is vivid yet insubstantial.
3. Celestial drum analogy: unborn and undying
“My sound, through countless aeons,
cannot be exhausted,
and has no coming or going.”
\[
\text{Cause/Effect} = \text{Unborn/Undying}
\]
Causality is not produced and does not cease.
4. Causality Is Non‑Temporal: No Coming, No Going
“If there were coming and going,
there would be eternalism or annihilation.
The buddhas never teach such views.”
1. Causality does not come from the past
Causality is not a temporal flow from past to present.
It is the present unfolding of mind.
2. Causality does not go to the future
Effects are not “future objects” but present manifestations.
3. Causality avoids eternalism and annihilation
\[
\text{Cause/Effect} \notin \{\text{Eternal},\,\text{Annihilated}\}
\]
Causality is dependent‑arising, not metaphysical substance.
5. The Causal Structure of the World‑Sea
1. Causality as world‑sea dynamics
\[
\mathcal{C}_{\text{world-sea}}
=
F(\mathcal{M},\mathcal{V},\mathcal{K},\mathcal{T})
\]
- Mind (M): causality abides in mind
- Vow (V): vows shape causal manifestation
- Karma (K): karmic winds have no origin
- Aeon (T): aeons determine temporal scale
2. Causality as a mode of manifestation
Causality is not the “content” of the world‑sea
but its mode of appearance.
6. Causality and the Bodhisattva Path: True Repentance and Non‑Arising
1. True repentance = seeing causality’s lack of origin
“To know thus is true repentance;
all evils become purified.”
Repentance is not erasing past deeds
but realizing the non‑origin of causality.
2. Non‑arising patience = seeing causality as unborn
\[
\text{Cause/Effect} = \text{Unborn}
\]
This insight leads countless devas to attain
the patience of the non‑arising of dharmas.
7. The Causality Equation of the World‑Sea
\[
\mathcal{C}_{\text{world-sea}}
=
\Big(
\text{Non‑Spatial},\,
\text{Non‑Temporal},\,
\text{Mind‑Based},\,
\text{Non‑Originated},\,
\text{Holographic},\,
\text{Illusory}
\Big)
\]
The causal structure of the world‑sea is:
- Non‑spatial (not from the ten directions)
- Non‑temporal (no coming or going)
- Mind‑based (abiding in mind)
- Non‑originated (no place of arising)
- Holographic (heard according to beings’ minds)
- Illusory (like mirror‑images and magic)
8. Conclusion:
Causality Is Nowhere Found Except in a Single Thought
Causality does not come from the ten directions,
nor from inside or outside,
nor from past or future.
Causality abides in the mind,
arising from delusion,
without any origin.
It is like a mirror‑image—no coming or going;
like a magician’s illusion—no substance;
like the celestial drum—unborn and undying.
To understand the causal structure of the world‑sea
is to understand the root of the Huayan universe:
all causality arises from mind,
all causality lacks origin,
all causality is like illusion.
